As our due date approached, I had time to put together a little DIY project for Justin: The Dad-To-Be Gift Box, a super simple customizable gift that helps the man in your life feel connected to baby and excited for his next chapter. I chose things that are quirky, serve a purpose, and are specific to him. Let’s just say there were (almost) tears upon the reveal!
Side note and reminder: Prep this by week 37 because baby can come early. Riley came at week 38.5 and I was still putting finishing touches on it. I had to gift this to him when we were home from the hospital. Better late than never!
It really was one of those surprises you always hope to do for someone when they least expect it. Justin especially loves his “Best Buckin’ Dad” mug which he uses this every day for coffee. After all, newborn late nights require a ton of caffeine for dad. Plus he is a hunter so this mug is ideal for a guy like him!
Let’s get to it…and everything you see in my box is linked below.
- A Coffee Mug: Very important for a new dad in that newborn stage where coffee is life. There is a ton of fun mugs with graphics/sayings available on Etsy and Amazon.
- Food: Get him some treats that will last through the first week at least (or just the hospital). I chose his favourite chocolate and some beef jerky. Easy things to munch on while holding baby.
- Underwear: He can take these with him to the hospital. Who doesn’t love a new pair of undies?
- A book: I thought this was a cute idea to get a book that is centred around being a dad. He can read this with our baby for life!
- A big ticket item: I splurged on his favourite Le Labo fragrance not only because he loves it, but also because he had mentioned he wanted to get a refill. He totally didn’t expect it. He may not use it while around baby but he will use it to feel good about himself. That little self care item.
- Booze: Let’s face it…he might just want to crack a beer while baby is down or nursing…and that’s totally reasonable! I provided him with his favourite beer but you could opt for mini bottles of whiskey or coconut water for non-alcoholic.
- Dad Sweater: He might find himself envious of other dads if they are all wearing dad sweaters and he’s without. Help him feel dad hangout ready!
- Diaper Tote: The perfect vessel to re-use when baby comes. Ours is full of things for dirty diapers like diapers (duh), diaper cream, muslin cloths, thermometer, nail clippers, file, lotion, and more.
What would you add to your DIY Dad-To-Be Gift Box that makes it special?
